Of 38 plants from the cross S. trifasciata x S. deserti, 29 were diploid (2n = 40) and 9 were triploid (2n = 60). Hybrid and polyploid vigour was considerable. The high fertility of the diploid hybrids has allowed the production of F2 and back-cross populations. Twenty of the 108 clones of the (S. trifasciata x S. deserti) x S. trifasciata cross show promise.
