The 13C-n.m.r. signals of the pentitols and hexitols in aqueous solution, and of their acetates in chloroform solution, have been assigned by the use of specifically deuterium-substituted compounds. Qualitative correlations have been established between the chemical shifts and the codguration and preponderant conformation each of the alditols.
