Abstract. As a result of a bibliographic study and direct interviews with traditional midwives and their patients in different Cuban rural communities, the history of this profession since pre-Columbine times is examined. It shows the role that such women still play in our society. Magic and medicinal plants are enumerated showing their efficiency, way of use, dosages, their origin and the African Gods to whom they are consecrated
