Intact plants of Catharanthus roseus have been differentiated from haploid and diploid calluses. These regenerations have been initiated by cultivating the tissues 13 months (diploid cells), respectively 5 months (haploid cells)with different combinations concerning the con­ centrations of phytohormones (kinetin and ,B-indolyl-acetic acid). Since four years we have grown the induced plants in the greenhouse and have propagated them by shoots and seeds. Phytochemical investigations have shown that the regenerated plants may contain twice as much serpentine/raubasine as the stock plants and several times as much of these alkaloids as the calluses the regenerates came from. The importance of tissue cultures for production of high-yielding strains of medicinal plants has been stressed especially.
