Antifungal Properties of Proteins (Agglutinins)from the Red Alga Hypnea musciformis (Wulfen)Lamouroux
- Botanica Marina, 40(1-6), p.281-284, 2009 .
A protein fraction, rich in agglutinins, obtained from the red alga Hypnea musciformis by precipitation with ammonium sulfate (F40/7o)showed antifungal activity against the fungi Trichophyton rubrum and Colletotrichum lindemunthianum, with total inhibition of spore germination at concentrations of 500, 1000 and 2000 g/mL. At 2000 g/mL, the fraction showed a trend to inhibit the development of C. musae and Fusarium oxysporum, but the results were not statistically significant. The fraction was not able to inhibit the growth of the fungi E solani and Aspergillus niger at the tested doses. The presence of the lycoprotein fetuin, for which the agglutinin in the fraction has affinity, removed the antifungal action against C. lindemunthianum and T. rubrum. The mechanism of the action of the protein fraction upon spore germination appears to involve the agglutinin present in that fraction since the addition of fetuin abolished the antifungal activity.
