Traditional composites consisting of different materials have been widely used to design structures with high performance demands. However, due to the mismatch of material parameters such composites tend to stress singularities, which may occur at the interface between different materials. This holds especially when the composite is exposed to high temperature gradients. A mismatch of thermal expansion coefficients will induce considerable residual stresses and may lead to cracking and debonding.
