These Proceedings are the product of the work of scientists from all over the world and represent the state of the art in many and varied fields of application of thermal analysis. As one of the few who has participated in all International Conferences on Thermal Analysis, I am particularly pleased to see how much we have progres-sed from the original workbook of the lst International Conference on Thermal Analysis of 1965 at Aberdeen which, in fact, represented the first collection of abstraéis dealing with thermal analysis only. At Aberdeen, and then at the 2nd ICTA in Worcester, Massa-chusetts, in 1968, it was realized that a large living space did exist in the scientific world for our interests. From then on, with the birth of the Journal of Thermal Analysis, of Thermochimica Acta and of Thermal Analysis Abstracts, our specific literature became stronger and stronger. However, the Proceedings of the International Conferences are still a unique chance to have an updated, comprehensive image of what is going on in thermal analysis, as seen from contributions of wide international character. Among the authors, side by side, are oíd prophets and new disciples, researchers from industry and acad¬emia, applied and theoretical scientists, all representing a true cross-section of the various aspects of thermal analysis in the world. Parallel to this growth of thermal analysis as an interdlsciplin ary, yet well-defined, field of scientific activity, ICTA has moved forward, adding to its institutional work on nomenclature, standards publications, awards, the coordination of the international activity of the many National and Regional Groups. Most of these were in-itially activated by ICTA members and now play a leading role in communication between scientists interested in thermal analysis as well as, in many countries, calorimetry.. From many of the meetings of these Groups other proceedings in the local languages contribute to the overall picture of the state of thermal analysis and calor-imetry. Thermal analysis is indeed growing faster and faster and these Proceedings are undoubtedly a sign of its strength. |
