La ecología estudia las relaciones entre los seres vivos y su ambiente, tanto biótico como abiótico. Esta es la definición tradicional, la cual es tan general que no permite establecer claramente los objetivos de la disciplina. Existen muchas otras definiciones que por el contrario limitan los alcances en aspectos muy particulares, frecuentemente relacionados con los niveles de organización. Es así que existen tratados sobre ecología fisiológica (ecofisiología) cuya unidad de estudio lo representan básicamente los indivi-duos, de ecología de poblaciones, de ecología de comunidades y de ecología de ecosistemas. Entre estos niveles han surgido otras áreas de investigación tales como las interacciones ecológicas, las metapoblaciones, las metacomunidades, ecología del paisaje y macroecología. Sea cualquier nivel de estudio de la ecología es un hecho que el objetivo último es el entendimiento de los procesos que dan origen a los patrones espaciotemporales multiescalares de la disciplina. |
