A series of controlled cross- and self-pollinations was made to determine the inheritance of root colour, total carotenoids, α-carotene and β-carotene in carrots. Five colour phenotypes (white, yellow, orange tinge, intermediate orange and orange) are described and the associated amounts of total coloured carotenoids, α-carotene and β-carotene are presented
