Recursos en línea: Resumen: THE genus Zanthoxylum (Rutaceae)has been the subject of a large number of investigations, and a variety of alkaloids have been iso1ated.l Perrins reported the isolation of berberine from 2. caribaeum2 Chloroform extraction of the bark of 2. caribaeunt, collected near Caracas, has now yielded 5-methoxycanthin-6-one. This base was previously found in Pentaceras australisl3 which is also a member of the Rutaceae family. Thinlayer chromatography of the quaternary bases extracted with methanol showed the presence of six bases. However, chromatography of the iodides on alumina resulted in the isolation of isocorydine methiodide as the only crystalline alkaloid.
