The effects of additivestyrene/ethylene-butylene/styrene copolymergrafted withmaleicanhydride (SEBS-g-MA)were investigated on the rheology, morphologyand mechanical propertiesof apolyethylene terephthalate(PET)/high density polyethylene (HDPE)blend. The ratio of the twocomponents waschanged in small increments totrackphaseinversion. The rheologymeasurements showthatSEBS-g-MA acts differentlyon HDPE and PET, asdifferentmorphologiesare formed duetoviscosity ratio change. Withthe help of electron microscopyvarious phasesafterextrusion and afterinjection moulding wererevealed and identified. Becauseofthe high viscosity of HDPE the co-continuous morphologywasimmediatelyformed when PET reached 30 vol percent. The range of the co-continuous structureofthe blend waswiderwhen SEBSg-MA wasadded, and the elongation tbreakalsoimproved asadditivecontentincreased, without asignificantstrength decrease. The divergenceofthe mechanicalpropertiesfrom the theoreticalvalue,i. e. the valuedetermined bythe mixing rule, canbeexplained bythe changing phasestructure.
