The abundant and mobile nitrate ion occupies a position of primary importance in the normal metabolism of higher plants. It is the major nutrient form of nitrogen in most soils. It is often the first factor limiting plant growth. In the great majority of cases it is assimilated so rapidly following absorption that its concentration within plant tissues never rises above a few hundred parts per million.
