Anaerobic digestion is a biological process in which organic matter is converted to methane and carbon dioxide in the absence of oxygen (ToERIEN and HATTINGH, 1969). This process is widely used for the purification of wastes containing high concentrations of organic material such as domestic sewage sludge and effluents from various industries.
