Viruses transmitted by the whitefly Bemisia tabaci were first studied in Brazil in the mid-1930s. The viruses associated with the 'infectious chlorosis of the Malvaceae' in Brazil were later shown to infect cultivated plants such as common bean, tomato and cotton. The first disease reported to be of epidemiological and economic importance in Brazil was bean golden mosaic.
