The factors contributing to stiffness and strength in fibre-reinforced thermoplastics are discussed, and the shortcomings of current materials assessed. An alternative production route involving continuous coating of fibre tows is described. The properties of nylon 6.6 reinforced with both carbon and glass fibres processed conventionally and by the alternative route are compared.
