During the past two decades, the effects of structural changes in the polyimide backbone upon the physical and mechanical properties of these polymers have been extensively investigated [1-5]. Properties that are discussed in this chapter include processability, glass transition and melt temperatures, solubility, colour and dielectric constant, and hypotheses to explain why these properties vary in certain ways are proposed. References are given to original literature which provides quantitative analyses of these relationships.
