The name 'auxin' comes from the Greek word 'auxein', which means 'to increase', and was first used to depict a class of compounds able to promote plant growth when applied exogenously. In planta, auxin plays a role in almost all aspects of development and coordinates processes throughout plant life, across all species from mosses to flowering plants.
