The prosperous agriculture of Yucatan prior to World War Il was essentially a monoculture of henequen from which sisal fiber was produced for export. Alter the war the world market for sisal weakened. New crops were required to revive the agricultural income and raise the standard of living of a predominante/y Mayan population
