The agriculture of Yucatan for the past century has consisted mostly of sisal jiber for export supplemented by small units of vegetables, jruits, and livestock for local consumption. Livestock have largely searched for their own feed in a free-range system and have done poorly. Since World War JI the need to broaden the base oj agriculture with new crops has become urgent. Land use in the sisal zone is a major problem but the potential for a productive livestock enterprise is impressive
