The primary aim of the study is to detect the flavonoids, phenolic acids and xanthones in sixteen commercial herbal formulations traditionally used as expectorants, hepatoprotectives, anti-inflammatory agents and as antipyretics. HPTLC method was adopted to confirm the presence of these common secondary metabolites in the tested commercial herbal formulations. Results of the study clearly revealed that these 3 formulations contains flavonoids, 8 formulations contains phenolic acids and 5 contains xanthones. The developed HPTLC method can be employed for the routine investigations of flavonoids, phenolic acids and xanthones in these herbal formulations
