Working towards a better future for the African coconut farmer / Organized jointly by National Coconut Development Programme of Tanzania and Burotrop - 81 p. ; 30 cm.

It gives me great pleasure and honour to welcome you all to this first Seminar on Coconuts in Africa under the auspices of BUROTROP. We NCDP and the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock Development and Co-operatives felt very honoured that BUROTROP picked Tanzania as the venue. For that reason we felt that the best way we could show appreciation for that gesture is to play good hosts to this seminar. Unfortunately a number of things were not in our favour. Whereas it is ideal to combine seminar sessions with field trips, this seminar is being held far from the coconut growing áreas. We also encountered last minute problems with interpreters. We hope to be able to overeóme the problem of the interpreters. Ladies and Gentlemen, despite the fact that we cannot hear the sounds of the whispering coconut leaves outside the Conference Hall, Arusha has still got a lot to offer. About 80 kms East of here is the Kilimanjaro, Africa´s highest mountain. Overlooking the Conference Hall is the picturesque Mount Meru. About 150 km west of here is a game paradise, the Ngorongoro Cráter, which is one of the seven wonders of the world. To crown it all, Arusha has very pleasant and hospitable residents. You are all encouraged to explore these áreas whenever you have time off from the Seminar. I have been informed by the seminar organizers that you will have a chance to see coconuts in Tanzanian fields when you travel to Dar es Salaam. This should also give you a chance to see the Coastal Belt of Tanzania which is remarkably different from here. Meanwhile, I would like to encourage you to cali on any NCDP member of staff for any assistance or guidance during your stay in Tanzania. With these few remarks, Mr Chairman, I would like to wish you all an enjoyable stay in Tanzania. It is my hope that your seminar will be pleasant and successful. Thank you. WELCOME ADDRESS BY MR* P, KINYAWA NCDP Coordinator
