Rheum ribes Linn (Polygonaceae)root is used traditionally to treat diabetes, hemorrhoids, ulcers, and diarrhea. Here, the hypoglyeemic effeet of R. ribes root extraet in healthy miee was investigated. Fasted mice were given a single dose of 50 mg/kg of three extraets of different polarity from R. ribes by gastrie feeding and the blood glueose was measured O,1,2,4, and 24 h later. The aqueous extract showed a significant hypoglyeemie effeet./n vitro, the aqueous extraet stimulated insulin release from INS-lEeells at both stimulatory (20mM)and non-stimulatory (1mM)glucose eoneentrations, thus suggesting a meehanism for the in vivo effeet. The hypoglycemie active fraction was found to contain anthraquinone glycosides of aloe emodin, emodin, physcion, and chrysophanol derivatives.
