In this study, lipase-catalyzed ring-opening polymerization of lactones such as 11-undecanolide and 15-pentadecanolide was investigated to estimate the effect of the water content in a reaction mixture on polymerization. The scheme used for the polymerization system consisted of the following two steps. First, as an initiation step, the lactone reacts with water through the acyl-enzyme to yield the corresponding hydroxyl acid. Second, as a propagation step, the lactone reacts with the hydroxyl acid or polymer through the acyl-enzyme. It was shown that the rate equation derived from the present scheme was well supported by the experimental data. The maximum numberaverage molecular weight correlated to the water content in the organic solvent.
