The transport through the midgut wall that is relevant for nutrition is passive and not carrier-mediated. Five minutes after feeding a 1 M glucose solution, half of the glucose that had entered the midgut is absorbed through the midgut wall. Absorption of fructose, mannitol and 3-0-methylglucose equals that of glucose and is identical in summer and in winter. 3-0-methylglucose is not metabolized in the bee and can be found in equilibrium in the haemolymph and in the liquid compartment of the total midgut 30min after an injection into the haemolymph. Glucose and fructose are metabolized to carbon dioxide at similar rates when injected into the haemolymph. Facilitating mechanisms for sugar absorption and supplying the bee's high energy needs are discussed.
