520 3 _aThe surgical reconstruction of diseased arteries with synthetic vessels has provided significantly satisfactory results for patients.'-4 However, surgical operations have been limited to the relatively large-diameter high-f low, lowresistance vessels (greater than 6 mm in inner diameter)including the aorta, iliac, and femoral vessels. Small-diameter vessels (less than 6 mm in inner diameter)are not in general clinical use due to their limited long-term biocompatibility and low patency rates in experimental testing. Anastomotic hyperplasia may require revision. Anastomotic hyperplasia occurs in synthetic artificial grafts but also in grafts from mammary veins and arteries as well as autogenous veins and arteries. This complication has been suggested to result partially from compliance mismatch.
