520 3 _aMost artificial lighting systems operate with a 1W120 Hz flickering, an undesirable condition for studies on photosynthesis, requiring a fluctuating (flashing light effect)as well as a constant light flux. The amplitude of this flickering depends on the type of lamps and on the power supply. Selected lamps and related power supplies providing a flickering-free light source are critically reviewed. A new system is proposed, that combines a high intensity discharge lamp (simulating natural sunlight)with a high-frequency (>40 kHz)ballast. This power supply provides a flickering-free light flux, and offers such advantages as the use of lamps with high energy output and long life expectancy.
