520 3 _aThe corrosion reactions which take place at a defect free metal/polymer mterface and the delammatlon m the vlcmlty of defects are not yet understood In this paper several recently developed expmmental techmques are applied to such corrosion systems to elucidate the fundamental corrosion processes for polymer coated metals The transport of water and oxygen through the coating and the elcctrochemlcal reactivity of the coated metal arc rnveatlgated using a quartz-crystal muxobalance, FMR spectroscopy and electrochemical dc and ac techniques Hnth a specml reference electrode posltloned at the metal-polymer interface The delammatlon of the polymerrc coatmg m the waty of defects IS analysed by the scanning Kelvm-probe The combined apphcatlon of these techniques leads to a corrosion model, which explams the corrosion protection of metals by polymers.
