245 1 0 _aGenetic resource conservation: the end and the means
490 0 _vJournal of the Royal Society of Arts, 122(5211), p.157-169, 1974
520 3 _aI am aware, Mr Chairman, that my title embraces a wide field, so it will be as well to begin with some definitions and delimitations. The resources I shall refer to are those of the living kingdoms, but viewed in a special sence: not so much in terms of immediate value, but as continuing and developing assets. The case I shall argue is that to ensure for our species the future use and enjoyment of these assets there is an urgent need now to preserve the genetic diversity of plants and animals and to guard their capacity for self-renewal: in the jargon of population genetics, to conserve their gene pools.
