245 1 0 _aPsychrophilic anaerobic digestion of human waste
490 0 _vBioresource Technology, 50(2), p.103-106, 1994
520 3 _aHuman waste was degraded into biogas at a psychrophilic temperature of 15±1°C. Below 20°C methane production was observed only with the addition of temperature-adapted seed culture. Biogas produced was 0·148 m3 per kg total solids degraded/per day, at 30 day retention time, and methane content was 57 per cent. Pathogenic bacterial count per 100 ml in the human waste was reduced from an initial 1024 to 103 after the anaerobic and chemical treatments. COD and BOD were reduced by up to 97 and 40 per cent respectively. Total solids reduction was 77 per cent. An integrated anaerobic digester/toilet was designed, fabricated, commissioned and tested.
