520 3 _aPost-fire serai changes in the structure and composition of Abies concolor-dominated vegetation were studied in the northern Sierra Nevada. The major change observed was a shift in dominance from montane chaparral shrubs to Abies concolor. Despite large changes in the dominance of individual species, most species encountered can occur at any point in the sere. Regeneration of shrub species was episodic, occurring only after fire or other disturbance. Abies concolor reproduction was continuous throughout the succession. However, tree density decreased with time as basal area increased to a maximum of 100 to 125 m²/ha. All stages of the seral sequence were characterized by greater than 75 percent canopy coverage and a predominantly monolayered structure. On older sites, openings in the canopy caused by tree mortality allowed patchy understory development. Two species groups were detected in association analysis. One group, which contained A. concolor and three montane chaparral shrubs, characterized the early stages of succession. The second group, primarily herbaceous and sub-shrub root parasites, characterized mature A. concolor forests. Polar ordination also revealed two major clusters of stands characteristic of the montane chaparral and forest-dominated phases of succession.
