520 3 _aA number of investigators have found that the macroscopic stiffness of structural elements is increased when micropolar elastic behavior is attributed to the material making up the element. Stress boundary conditions are prescribed such that surfaces r equals a, b are traction-free, and on end faces theta equals 0, pi the shear stress resultant is - P and the normal stress resultant and moment vanish. Chauhan treats this as a problem in plane strain while Gauthier uses a plane stress approach. The stress solutions obtained are identical in form, but the integration constants differ in the way the elastic moduli combine. This Note extends the work of Chauhan to provide a displacement solution from which certain conclusions are drawn regarding the contribution of various micropolar elastic parameters to the macroscopic stiffness of the ring.
