520 3 _aMacroscopic carbon nanotube (CNT)articles have received considerable attention in the last decade as they are potentially high-value products of industrially relevant gas conversion processes. Structural composites could be an important high-volume application of CNT-articles thus produced. Of various approaches to fabricate CNT articles, direct-forming (DF)has been investigated extensively owing to its simplicity and the promising structural performance window. A growing understanding of the various processes in the DF value chain have led to recent advances in synthesis, collection and post-processing methodologies, and as a consequence continuously improving article performance. This paper aims to provide a comprehensive review of each step in this value chain and its specific role in dictating the mechanical performance of DF-CNT materials, with a focus on significant learnings made in the last 3-4 years. The influence of key synthesis parameters, methods to modify CNT articles, their efficacies, the effect of CNT physical attributes and processing-structure-property relationships in CNT-article composites are presented in detail. Important open questions and areas for improvement are identified and possible routes for enhanced mechanical performance are discussed. Such an inclusive understanding of the all critical factors from synthesis to composite fabrication is needed to debottleneck this technology towards broader adoption.
