| 520 | 3 | _aThe advancement in design and mechanical performance of biocomposites has expanded significantly towards developing polymers with specific capabilities. In this research, natural cellulose fiber from the Jipijapa palm (Carludovicapalmata)(CP)was used as reinforcement in a biocomposite material (BC)of thermoplastic starch (TPS)based on corn starch to describe cost-effective ways to improve the mechanical toughness and durability of BCs, while evaluating the potential as substitutes for petroleum-based plastics in industries such as packaging, electronic, automotive, aerospace and construction. The volumetric fraction of cellulose used in the manufacture of corn TPS composites were 10, 20 and 30 percent w/w by compression molding. The thermostability of the biocomposites was determined by thermogravimetric analysis. SEM images revealed residues of polymeric matrix adhered to the fiber surface suggesting good interfacial adhesion between fiber and matrix. The results of the solubility analysis performed on the biocomposites showed an increase in the water solubility of the TPS matrix. Likewise, the BC reached their hygrothermal stability after 10 days of exposure in humidity environments between 55 and 75 percent at 25 °C. The incorporation of cellulose fibers in the corn TPS biocomposite generated an increase in gelatinization temperature compared to TPS alone. Based on their excellent properties, biocomposites made up from cellulose fiber embedded in a corn TPS matrix, are suitable for various industrial applications, at a lower cost. | |
