520 3 _aWorld energy crisis and increasing prices of conventional energy sources like petrol and diesel, in the middle of rising general awareness among masses in favor of sustainable energy resources, have led to the search of alternate energy sources to meet the growing demand of world population. Plant-based biofuels play prominent role as source of renewable energy. Biofuels like ethanol and butanol (as gasoline additives) and long-chain hydrocarbons (as diesel additives or as jet fuels) can be produced from starch, cellulose, hemicellulose, and oils. Biofuels produced from plants have many advantages including being carbon neutral. This chapter provides an insight into plant-derived feedstocks, processing technologies for converting feedstocks to readily assimilative substrates, biofuel production strategies, and its economic impact. Biofuel production technologies from plant biomass have progressed at a remarkable rate, providing a profitable environmental friendly and sustainable alternative to fossil fuels for generations to come.
